Happy National Whale Shark Day! Whale sharks are Happy National Whale Shark Day!

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world, but these gentle giants feed mainly on plankton and other tiny organisms.

At the Aurora Fossil Museum, we love exploring the connections between today’s sharks and the prehistoric species represented in our fossil collections. From enormous whale sharks swimming in modern oceans to ancient shark teeth found in Aurora, sharks continue to inspire curiosity and wonder.

Celebrate today by learning something new about these incredible animals—and by helping protect the oceans they call home.

Did You Know? Millions of years ago, much of eas Did You Know?

Millions of years ago, much of eastern North Carolina was covered by a warm, shallow sea. The fossils found in Aurora help scientists reconstruct that ancient environment and understand how marine life, sea levels, and climate have changed over time.

Shark teeth may be some of the most recognizable finds, but the fossil record here also includes shells, coral, fish remains, marine mammal bones, and other clues from a prehistoric coastal ecosystem.

Each fossil is more than an interesting object—it is a piece of evidence that helps tell the story of North Carolina’s ancient past.
