Pit Rules
- No rock throwing
- No removal of bulk fossil material
- No collecting for personal/commercial profit
- The maximum screen size is 12 inches by 12 inches
- The maximum screen mesh size is ¼ inch
- The maximum permitted shovel or digging tool length is 3 feet
Please keep in mind that the Aurora Fossil Museum’s buildings, grounds, and Fossil Pits will be CLOSED to the public for the week beginning on Monday, May 19, 2025 so we can setup and prepare for the NC Fossil Festival. We will reopen the Fossil Pits at 12:00 on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The week leading up to the festival, we close the fossil pits and bring in new material for the festival. No fossil hunting will be available starting on Monday, May 19, 2025 until the pits re-open. The pits will re-open at 12:00 pm on Saturday, May 24, 2025. We close the pits at 8:00 pm on Saturday. Then re-open them at 10:00 am on Sunday.
